Modular by design

We are building a modular pathway to turn industrial off-gases into fuel ethanol, bringing carbon utilisation opportunities to India's steel and ferroalloy clusters.
Select Step 1, 2 or 3 to explore the process
Steel and ferroalloy plants release carbon-rich gas. Today it may be burned, flared or used for heat inside the plant.
Specialised microbes in a liquid medium use suitable gas as their feedstock. Every site is assessed before anything is decided.
A product for petrol blending and other qualified uses. Process and yields depend on the technology and on each plant.
Some steel and ferroalloy plants generate carbon-rich off-gases. Today these may be combusted, flared or used inside the plant for heat and power. Under suitable conditions, the same gases can be the feedstock for gas fermentation, a biological process that turns carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen into ethanol.
Punarva Bio's ambition is to make this approach practical for smaller industrial sites, through modular facilities and a deployment model that can be repeated from plant to plant.
Five stages, from a plant's own gas to a product a buyer can use. Select a stage to see what it involves and what decides it.
Candidate sources include off-gas from furnaces and kilns used in steel and ferroalloy production. Which streams qualify depends on what is in the gas, how much of it there is and how steadily it flows.
The gas is measured first, then cleaned and prepared for the fermentation step. Dust, tars and some trace compounds can harm the microbes, so the scope of conditioning is set by sampling at the site, not assumed.
Specialised microbes in a liquid medium use the gas as their source of carbon and energy and release ethanol. We plan compact modules sized for smaller sites. The fermentation process itself would come from a technology licensor.
Ethanol is separated from the fermentation liquid and purified to the grade the buyer needs. Fuel blending asks for a drier, purer product than some industrial uses, which affects the equipment and the energy needed.
Our initial focus is fuel ethanol for petrol blending, sold to qualified buyers. Other applications may be considered where the specification and the demand allow.
Process configuration, gas requirements and product yields depend on the selected technology and on conditions at each plant. This page describes an approach, not a performance guarantee.
Our model is a plan, not a record. The diagram shows how one carefully assessed site could lead to a repeatable design and, in time, to several plants in one region.
Illustrative. Punarva Bio is an early-stage venture and this shows our planned approach, not completed projects.
This is how we intend to work. It describes our approach and objectives, not proven performance.

Fuel ethanol is our initial focus. It has established blending and distribution channels, so a plant's carbon can reach a market that already exists.

Potential buyers
Plants with process gas rich in carbon monoxide or hydrogen may suit gas fermentation after assessment.
Some ferroalloy furnaces give off carbon-rich gas. Its use depends on composition and how steadily it is produced.
Plants near each other could share one design, one operating approach and one route to market.
Fuel ethanol moves through established blending and distribution channels, to buyers that meet the required standards.
We do not publish market sizes, yields or cost figures here. They will be shared only once they are supported by site data and partner validation.

Punarva Bio seeks to engage with five kinds of partner. Each has a role in turning an off-gas stream into a product a buyer can use.
